MATHCOUNTS
MATHCOUNTS is a national organization with the mission of increasing enthusiasm for and enhancing achievement in middle school mathematics. At St. Mary’s, “Club” MATHCOUNTS is a group of about 25 students who have been meeting weekly for several months to enjoy, have fun with, and be challenged in math.
Ten members of Club MATHCOUNTS were selected for the local competition at Aiken Technical College on Saturday, February 14, 2009. The St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic School MATHCOUNTS team placed first in team competition. The top individual of all members of all teams was David Stoner, a sixth grader at St. Mary's School.
The MATHCOUNTS competitive season ended Saturday, March 21, 2009 in Charleston, with a very respectable showing. The St. Mary's competing team made up of Devin McDermott, Jacob Przywara, David Stoner, and Carter Wertz, placed eighth in the state, while David came in third in the Countdown Round, and seventh overall. Alternates Ian DeMass, Natalie Gorensek, and Neal Patel performed admirably at The Citadel, as well, honing their skills in the hopes of bringing a local and state win for St. Mary's next year.
Bravo to team coach, Mrs. Bonnie Martin, and congratulations to each of these amazing "Mathletes" for their hard work, enthusiasm, endurance, and courage!
